The Antibacterial Effects of Some Medicinal Plants

The medicinal effects of some plants found in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State were tested on some common bacteria because of the current prevalent resistance of pathogenic bacteria to synthetic drugs used in treatment of diseases. This specific field of study is commonly referred to as Ethnomedicine under the broader field of Botany/Plant Science.

In the study, these plants were found to possess bioactive ingredients in substantial amounts which were confirmed by their antimicrobial effects on the bacteria tested.

These bacteria include Salmonella typhi, the common causative agent of typhoid fever, Escherichia coli, the common causative agent of gastroenteritis, Staphylococcus aureus, a common causative agent of STD and Enterococcus faecalis, a common causative agent of enteric diseases such as diarrhoea.

The findings validate the claims in the study area that traditional uses of plants can are alternative medicines for some diseases. These plants can be used as raw materials/precursors for the production of drugs. They can also be used as raw as alternative to some synthetic drugs which have been found to leave cancerous remnants in the body.
